Painting a Modern Bestiary Page

Thursday, 18 April, 10am-4pm (1 hour lunch break)
Location: Studio, 26 Exmouth Market,  EC1R 4QE
with Rebecca Jewell and Sandy Ross Sykes

In this one-day workshop natural history artists Rebecca Jewell and Sandy Ross Sykes will guide participants through creating their own artwork in the style of a Medieval Book of Beasts, or Bestiary.

During the Middle Ages, peoples’ knowledge about animals was often collected in bestiaries, which were manuscript compendiums of ‘beasts’, including images, descriptions, and stories – about familiar, unfamiliar, and fantastical animals. Rebecca and Sandy have been working with researchers on a project led by Exeter University, researching into the consequences of animal feeding, and creating a ‘contemporary bestiary’ exploring how and why people feed other animals in all sorts of situations.

Reference material will be provided, including images from Medieval Bestiary pages, animal specimens and historical natural history illustrations, and Rebecca and Sandy will demonstrate and teach painting techniques using watercolour, gouache, and gold pigment.

Materials are included.
